Art and Design in Ceramics
studio specializes in the creation of unique pieces of ceramics
and the "Habitare" line of products that consist of
decorative pieces, such as lamps and sconses, for interior and exterior use.
All pieces
are original designs created by German artist Katrin Schikora.
Since 1992, Katrin has resided in Yucatan, Mexico, after having
lived for 5 years in London, UK, studying Three Dimensional
Design/Ceramics, Photography and Art Therapy. Her multicultural
background is a constant source of inspiration for her artwork.
In 1997, Katrin built her studio in the Maya village of Cholul,
situated North East of Merida, Yucatan. Because of the beautiful,
quiet and tropical environment, this has become a unique and
special place for her artistic inspiration. It is here where
she works with her three assistants in creating her art.
Her talent and her European art and design background, combined
with influences of pre-Columbian and contemporary Mexican Art,
find expression in a great variety of unique pieces and small
limited edition series, characterized by rich textures and brilliant
colors. |

PRODUCTION
The work produced in the studio falls into two categories:
Katrin's personal artwork and her commercial series "Habitare".
She’s exhibited her artwork in personal and group exhibitions
and Katrin is frequently invited to participate in national
and international shows and ceramic competitions. Her pieces
have won several national prizes.

Her three assistants, Jorge, Marcos and Alex, are in charge of the
production line "Habitare", consisting of a great range
of decorative pieces with an emphasis on lighting.
Jorge, Marcos and Alex live in nearby villages and were introduced
by Katrin to the craft of ceramics. Throughout the years, they have
turned into artisans with a great artistic sensitivity that naturally
flows into the creation of ideas and the development of new designs.
MATERIALS
The clay mixtures used in the studio are prepared by hand with different
prime materials brought in from Zacatecas and Monterrey. The work
is mainly fired up to 1080 degrees centigrade in two gas kilns (built
in the year 2000). |
EXHIBITION
A show room attached to the studio is open to the public. Here visitors
can appreciate and purchase pieces from Katrin’s commercial
line of sculptures and installations. Visitors are also invited to
tour the ceramic studio and observe the creative process.
COMMERCIALIZATION
During
the past ten years a group of permanent clients has established itself
who place orders. These include architects, interior designers, hotels,
outlets for interior decoration and gift shops, located in the Yucatán
peninsula and in other parts of the Mexican republic. The commercial
line "Habitare"' is exported to the USA and Europe.

Katrin
involves herself with her clients's needs regarding specific
technical requirements and questions of interior design. Her
goal is to create pieces that are as unique to her as they
are to her clients.
WHERE WE ARE GOING, NOW
"We are at the beginning of a revitalization period marked
by a continuous creative approach, exploring the unlimited
possibilities of our materials through a constant expansion
of our aesthetic concepts.
Our challenge is to gain new spaces for ceramics in the area
of interior design and to increase its presence in our everyday
lives."
